Spring is the perfect time of year to do some sprucing up on the outside of your home. Adding or improving the trees around your house is an effective way to add value to your home. Even taking a few simple steps can instantly improve the look of your landscaping and make it more visually appealing. The following are 4 great tree tips for increasing curb appeal.
1. Add Some Color
Revive the area at the base of trees by covering the ground with just a few inches of fresh dirt and mulch. Then plant flowers for a boost of color. Impatiens and lily-of-the-valley are a few types of flowers that do well in the shade. Make sure not to dig too deeply or vigorously so as not to damage the tree at the base. Trees such as poplars, willows, and white oaks have less sensitive roots and are easier to plant around.
2. Minor Shrub Pruning
Taking even a little off the top can clean up shaggy shrubs and keep them looking healthy. It’s recommended to prune flowers on shrubs right when the blooms start to fade. This will help new blooms appear. It’s advised to leave major tree trimming until later in the summer. That way it’s easier to see exactly how the branches will hang once they’re thick with full grown leaves.
3. Plant Some Trees
If your home is lacking trees now is a good time to invest in quality saplings. Trees can completely change the look of almost any type of landscaping. They also provide shade during summer months. Start by choosing trees that are native to your area and will grow well with a minimal amount of care. It’s advised to dig a hole about one-and-a-half times wider than the roots of the tree. The hole also needs to be at least as deep. Mix a bit of planting soil with the dirt in the hole and pack it down. Loosen up the roots of the tree and put it in the hole. Adjust the tree and add dirt until it is firm and solid in the hole.
4. Watch for Power Lines
It’s extremely important to find out where any power lines are buried before you start digging. Paying attention to power lines applies to the lines that are above as well as those that are below the ground. Find out how tall a tree normally grows before planting one that may tangle with lines several years down the road.
