This Cape Cod–style home in St. Louis had plenty of charm, but the kitchen layout didn’t match the homeowners’ needs. The flow felt awkward, the knee wall seating area created frustration, and the existing bar setup wasn’t practical. They were ready for a change and wanted a trusted partner to help reimagine the heart of their home. That’s where Lakeside Renovation & Design came in.
From the start, the homeowners appreciated our organized design-build process, thoughtful communication, and collaborative approach. After several conversations throughout the year, they officially signed on in late summer, and we got to work bringing their vision to life.
Designing a Kitchen for Real Life: Function + Flow
This project was more than a kitchen update—it was a full first-floor transformation. One of the first priorities was improving the layout to create better flow. We moved the work triangle closer together to make cooking more efficient and opened up walkways around the island so others could sit, dine, or pass through without interrupting the person prepping meals.
Storage was also key. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt organized and accessible, so we included smart custom cabinetry features.
Scope of Work Included:
- A built-in hall tree with drawers and tall door storage to replace the old bar and coat closet
- Complete kitchen remodel with improved layout and flow
- Custom cabinetry with built-in accessories
- New and refinished flooring throughout the first floor
- Removal of outdated knee wall and columns for open-concept feel
- A lighted coffee bar area to streamline morning routines
- An appliance garage to keep everyday items like the toaster within reach but out of sight
- Two custom pantry cabinets with roll-out shelves—one of which doubles as broom and vacuum storage
A Few Unexpected Twists During the Kitchen Remodeling
As with most renovations, there were a few surprises—like discovering discontinued vinyl siding during demo. We helped source the closest match available and provided options for a future James Hardie siding upgrade. Challenges like these are a natural part of the remodeling process, and our team stayed focused on finding timely solutions without compromising the overall vision.
